Geology Talk glacial influences in the Cottonwood Canyons!
Learn how to really work the terrain on skis!
This evening, join Forest Service hydrogeoloist Joe Gates for a slide show and talk on how the forces of glaciation have shaped the mountains and canyons of the Wasatch. This will include some basic glaciology and discussion of possible causes of major glacial periods. This will be followed by a history of glacial activity in the Cottonwood Canyons during the last major glacial period (last 2.8 million years), with emphasis on the latest glacial period (30,000 to 7,000 years ago). Then participants will hear a description of the erosive and depositional glacial features of the canyons, in particular Little Cottonwood Canyon, as well as how glacial features relate to ski terrain.
